She can't remember a time when she didn't like to draw and color. From early memories
of copying cartoons from the newspaper, and designing paper doll ball gowns for
Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor, to illustrating points for the church high
school newsletter, her fingers always found the pencil.
College days included part time work in the college print shop
where she used her developing skills in illustration, graphic arts and ad layout.
This experience proved vital in the next twenty years while she worked in two
large churches and schools in the graphic arts departments.
It was a very special Christmas gift of a set of oil paints from her number one
fan, husband Jerry, that opened her heart to painting. That was in the middle
1970's and it has been a growing love.
In 1975, a move to Florida from Indiana gave Sue the opportunity
to take adult education painting classes at a nearby barn in the Miami Lakes area.
During the next couple of years she was introduced to tole painting by a dear
friend, and in her words, "got serious about technique." This led to
becoming a member of the Society of Decorative Painters and a local chapter in
the Miami area, and later a chapter in the Ft. Lauderdale area. Her association
with these groups led to seminars held by respected national teachers and painters,
such as Peggy Stogdill, MDA, to whom Sue credits much of her inspiration.
Time spent at convention classes, concentrated study seminars,
and many workshops and classes have influenced style and ability through the years.
She also painted for a boutique in Delray Beach, FL, for around twelve years,
where fine clothing and accessories were sold.
In 1985, a move to the Boca Raton area opened an opportunity
to take drawing classes at Palm Beach Community College where she feels she received
a foundation to go under her paintings, and revived her interest in pen and ink
drawing. Sue also studied watercolor painting with the late Richard Wilson of
Delray Beach.
A
highlight of her art experience came in 2000, when Sue earned her Certified Decorative
Artist status from the Society of Decorative Painters.
Sue's specialty is commissioned work and her preferred medium
is oil. A versatile artist, Sue has the ability to design the piece to fit the
person. She enjoys giving a painting personal meaning for the client. Her love
of the beauty of God's creation and her respect for craftsmanship make every project
special and a real joy to complete. Her experience spans from murals to miniatures
and detail is her delight.
Sue resides in Boynton Beach, Florida, with her
husband Jerry, and is active in her local church in the music ministry.
